I believe Shawn meant to put the “Holy Spirit”(in quotes)

There is danger in intimating that if one only has the “correct” theology and “obeys” correctly that he will be saved. Many in the Church of Christ seems to overlook the part in 1 Corintians 13 “…and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

Use to… and still some in the CoC would say…just read the bible…and like Nike…”Just do it!” disregarding the operation (and power) of the Holy Spirit. In recent years they have “discovered” the Holy Spirit. Praise God!

RE: Two questions on Repentance article by Mac Deavers suggest to me he is of the old school of the CoC. Why? “If we can be save by believing anything then we don’t need the Bible” is obviously silly, evasive, and does not address the real truth. The Bible states in Roman 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved.” He also state, “The kind of heart that takes a man to glory is an honest and good one.” Sir, only a heart of the man or woman whose sins have been covered by the blood of Jesus Christ – will be taken to glory. You want to see ones heart? – “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it” – Jeremiah 17:9
What is it about grace and saving faith that is go difficulty for some to grasp?

It will indeed be interesting to see a father and son on opposite view points. I look forward to the conversation continuing.

Perhaps with some comment moderation this can finally be productive again.

Brother Gill, More often, it seems that we have a world “going to Hell” and the church “going to the mat.” I have seen the power of the gospel and know it is by God’s grace, through faith that we are saved – and not that of ourselves, lest any man boast.” Isn’t it time to throw out man’s “recipes” for getting saved and get on with spreading the “good news,” which is – God saves?

How’s that for an introduction?

Brother Deaver, You certainly have a great deal of education and experience. Where would you classify yourself in the range of Church of Christ preachers? Traditional(the older way) or progressive (the less dogmatic). I have witnessed the evolution of the CofC and have seen 1) more awareness of the Holy Spirit, 2) a move toward grace, and 3)the position on music modified (which has always been the biggest non-issue), in my opinion. To me, the BIGGEST hurdle is the “security of the believer” – no question.

What say you, sir?
